Biographical information
Born in Cork, 1953.
Educated through the medium of Irish.
BA in English and Philosophy
MA in English from University College Cork.
Tutored and lectured in English Department of University, 1977-1979 while simultaneously Literature Officer with Triskel Arts Centre.
Co-Director Cork Film Festival, 1986 - 1989.
Director of Poetry Ireland, the national poetry organisation, 1989-2000.
He was elected a member of Aosdána, Ireland’s academy of the arts, in 1999.
He served on The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon from 2003 to 2008
Broadcast media work:
In 1990-1991 he was assistant director on Pages for the Great Book of Ireland, a film commissioned from Gandon Productions for RTE which explored the making of the Great Book and was also in itself a part of the exploratory process by which the Book unfolded.
He was presenter of Poetry Now on RTE Radio 1 from 1996 to 1997, and from 1993 to 1995 presented that station’s weekly books programme, Inprint.
In 1995 he edited and presented the RTE Radio Thomas Davis Lecture Series, Irish Poetry Since Kavanagh (see publications above).
Hidden Treasures, a four-part documentary series he scripted and narrated for Loopline Productions, was broadcast on RTE and BBC television in 1998.
He scripted and presented RTE television’s books programme, Imprint, for three seasons, 1999-2000.
In 2001 he scripted and narrated Ordinary Things, a Loopline production for the National Museum of Ireland
Also in 2001 he co-scripted and narrated Farmleigh, The Story of a House, a Loopline Production for RTE.
For five years he presented The Invisible Thread, an interview series on RTE Lyric FM
He is a frequent commentator on Irish public and literary affairs for RTÉ radio and television, for BBC radio and for PBS in the USA
He has served on the Boards of Triskel Arts Centre, Irish Writers Centre, Project Arts Centre, Ireland Literature Exchange and the African Cultural Project among others.
In 2001 he was the author of the so-called Dorgan Report, an analysis commissioned by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands of submissions received on foot of the then Minister’s consultation document, Towards A New Framework For The Arts.
